Dokra art is a method of casting metal that has been practiced for more than four thousand years, beginning with the Indus Valley Civilization. Its unique characteristics include a rough, tribal look and intricate patterns. There is a close relationship between the natural landscape and cultural history of the states where the Dokra Damar people live (West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand) and this age-old art form. For their castings, the artists often explore the surrounding forest for natural materials like clay, beeswax, and charcoal. To carve wax designs, the lost wax technique is used first to make a clay mold. They pour on more clay to make a mold. Once the mold has been warmed with wood to melt the wax, the empty space is filled with molten brass. An outstanding representation of their culture, environment, and artistic skill, the finished piece was revealed by breaking the cooled clay to expose it.
